Supporting Kelis will be a cast of female hip hop artists including Minneapolis’ DJ Sophia Eris

Kelis

Kelis describes her sixth album as “a kind of unspoken lovefest”, albeit one involving two unlikely partners. On the one hand, there is Kelis Rogers, who first came to prominence singing the hook of Ol’ Dirty Bastard’s 1999 hit Got Your Money; whose debut album Kaleidoscope helped usher in the wave of sharp, thrillingly futuristic r’n’b that dominated the charts in the early Noughties: as exemplified by her global hit, 2003’s Milkshake; whose last album was a pop-dance extravaganza featuring production from will.i.am and David Guetta.

Leikeli47

Arriving cloaked in mystery in the early 2010s, this New York rapper was always seen wearing a signature ski mask and offered almost no information as to her identity or background, choosing instead to focus on her infectious, fun, and sometimes experimentally raucous rhyme and production styles. For the most part, the MC vehemently avoided interviews, but on rare occasion granted them, only to keep her identity and personal information closely guarded. One extensive interview in 2015 only revealed how a lonely childhood growing up in Brooklyn led her to the inspiration and solace of creating her own music. Early mixtapes like 2012’s LK-47 and 2014’s LK-47, Pt. 2 led to a contract with RCA Records, as well as some high-profile concert spots, such as opening for Skrillex at Madison Square Garden on direct invitation from the dubstep superstar himself. A self-titled album arrived in 2015 and the mysterious MC went on to perform several shows in support of it. Throughout 2016, she guested on tracks by Baauer (“Day Ones”), AlunaGeorge (“Mean What I Mean”), and Pussy Riot (“Straight Outta Vagina”), appeared on the soundtrack of Insecure, and released singles that led to the following year’s Wash & Set, her second album for RCA. ~ Fred Thomas, Rovi

Yaeji

Yaeji is Kathy Yaeji Lee, a 24-year-old dance producer who splits time between Seoul and New York. Her voice is unmistakably her own – a hushed whisper sliding in and out of English and Korean, so present yet barely there at all. Yaeji’s self-titled debut came out this past Spring to wide-eyed praise from Pitchfork, Fader, Boiler Room, NPR, Resident Advisor, and the New Yorker.

Yaeji follows up her debut with ‘EP2’, out November 3 on Godmode. First single ‘drink i’m sippin on’ is a bold step forward, with crisp modular synth programming influenced in equal parts by rap and techno, and a dizzyingly catchy vocal performance about “making up for what you can’t see.” The video is directed by frequent collaborator Anthony Sylvester, and was shot verite in the ambient lighting of New York’s Chinatown.
