With high anticipation for their first album in 22 years, Slowdive is set to play the newly re-hauled Palace Theatre on May 2nd in St. Paul. In the middle of six month, multi-continent tour, the shoegaze pioneers are releasing Slowdive, the fitting self-titled album, on May 5th. Tickets to their tour stop in St. Paul, with support of Japanese Breakfast, are going quickly HERE.
When Slowdive announced a reunion, a new album, and signing to a new label (Dead Oceans) in 2014, fans of the UK dream-pop quintet couldn’t wait to hear the new music. In January and March of 2017, two songs were released, one with a music video: “Sugar for the Pill” (with video) and “Star Roving.” According to NPR, “Perhaps the most remarkable thing about Slowdive’s new song [“Star Roving”]—the band’s first in 22 years—is that it sounds like Slowdive.” And it’s true; both new tracks layer dreamy guitars, hushed vocals, progressive and metallic drums, all tied together with an endless hum of synths. They blend the familiar and unfamiliar; like developing an over two-decade roll of film and it’s all distorted and magically colorful but you can definitely make out who is in the picture.
No matter how long it’s been or how much popularity shoegaze and post-rock has gained in that time, Slowdive is still a center point of gravity for many musicians and fans in this genre and scene. Come help welcome Slowdive back by swaying and buzzing all night at the Palace Theatre in St. Paul on May 2nd!
