Critically renowned rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar is coming to The Orpheum Theater in Minneapolis January 21st — 26th as part of the 2019-2020 Broadway on Hennepin series. Jesus Christ Superstar is a 1970 rock opera with music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Tim Rice. The musical started as a rock opera concept album before its Broadway debut in 1971. The musical is mostly sung-through, with little spoken dialogue.
In celebration of its 50th anniversary, this mesmerizing production finally comes to North America. Originally staged by London’s Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre, this production won the 2017 Olivier Award for Best Musical Revival, garnering unprecedented reviews and accolades. This new production of the iconic musical phenomenon set against the backdrop of an extraordinary series of events during the final weeks in the life of Jesus Christ as seen through the eyes of Judas. Reflecting the rock roots that defined a generation, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s legendary score includes “I Don’t Know How to Love Him,” “Gethsemane,” “Heaven on Their Minds,” and “Superstar.”
