My Favorite Sets of 2017 – Markus Akre

Looking back at 2017 TCM will have covered over 450 shows and well over 1,000 artists. Asking our staff to give us their 5 favorite sets led to quite a bit of head scratching. We will share them with you over the next few days.

Gary Numan at First Avenue

This artist has been my personal favorite since junior high and it seemed almost impossible that he would live up to the high expectations I had for his show in November. Yet somehow he reinvented himself with his latest album “Savage” without abandoning what make him an influence to countless bands with his past work.

Dance Assault at The Icehouse

I had been aware of this band but don’t think I had consciously listened to their music. That rapidly changed after seeing them live. Now when on of their songs comes on, I turn up the volume. Their music is perfect 80s dance music but feels fresh and current.

Art Garfunkel at the Pantages

No photos allowed for this one but anytime an artist moves you to tears by just listening to him, that’s a great set

Thomas Abban at The Icehouse

I was skeptical of the hype laid on by his publicist. Bruno Mars? Jimi Hendrix? Yeah, suuuuuuure. Holy Crap was I wrong! This guy is not trying to be someone else, he’s got that vibe naturally in spades.

Kite at The Amsterdam

Another artist I knew little about going into the show (honest I was there for the opener) but fell head over heels in love with
