Maps & Atlases will be making a stop at The 7th Street Entry on Tuesday, May 29th for a can’t miss show. In a musical landscape pitted with pop stars and pigeonholes, Maps & Atlases defy easy categorization, choosing to walk their own incomparable path. Beware and Be Grateful (2012) builds upon the Chicago-based band’s acclaimed Barsuk debut, Perch Patchwork(2010), melding their trademark experimentalism with a more direct — though no less beguiling — songcraft. The album abounds with invention, spanning hymnal harmonies, percolating rhythms, even, in the case of centerpiece track “Silver Self”, a full-on guitar solo. Songs like “Remote and Dark Years” and “Winter” are gloriously liquid and lyrical, channeling M&A’s maximalist creativity into a truly inviting brand of boundary-busting, asymmetrical pop.
This Tuesday night show will be the kickoff for Map & Atlases tour in support of their new release ‘Lightness Is Nothing New’. The band’s fifth studio album will be released on June 1. The first single from the album titled “Fall Apart” has been unveiled for your listening pleasure below. Pre-orders for the release on vinyl and CD can be made here. Digital pre-orders can be made on iTunes. This will be the first release without founding member Erin Elders, who left the band in 2015. Lightlessness Is Nothing New will be the follow up to their 2012 studio album Beware and Be Grateful.
Local group Yana will be kicking off the night. With very little about this band to be found online, I am super excited for what they could bring to the table. I mean, let’s be honest, we clearly have the best music scene in the country so it’s safe to assume that these guys will be amazing and get the night started off on the right foot.
Tickets are still available here.
