Since according to his words “Christmas in Miami doesn’t feel like Christmas” Jason Derulo’s first show of 2016 was at Treasure Island in southern Minnesota. It was the first time I covered a show at that venue and I found it well organized and friendly. A low stage and closeness to the artist are always welcome for photographers.
The show opened with short DJ set to bring out the band and dancers. Derulo took to the stage to the tune of “Other Side” and pulled the audience into his grasp very quickly. The audience leaned heavily towards women and covered a wide age range from teenagers up to baby boomers. Some of the crowd had driven from the Twin Cities showing the pull Derulo has. The venue was sold about, with about 3000 fans in attendance.
Jason Derulo is a great performer, the band stayed in the background while he and his 4 dancers ruled the stage. The dance routines were smooth and well-practiced. The set transitioned from dance numbers to slower songs focusing on Derulo’s vocals and back. He shared a few stories with the audience including the one where his mother told him “he made it” after telling her he was working with Stevie Wonder. The audience went cheerfully along for the ride, singing back choruses and cat calls sounding out frequently.
The show closed with faster numbers and of course “Talk Dirty”. The encore was a single song “Pull Up”. Overall I found the concert to be great fun and was impressed seeing Jason Dreulo live.
