Minneapolis based five-piece alt rockers WTF, out supporting their self-titled debut release, brought a whole lot of new music to a packed 7th Street Entry on Wednesday night. Local rock was spotlighted all evening as they were supported by Lydia Liza and Thomas Abban.

Up first was self taught guitarist/songwriter Lydia Liza. Opening with a solo acoustic tune, her voice was soothing and familiar. After a stirring opener, Lydia brought out the full band and let the crowd know that this was the first time they played together as a band in the Twin Cities. The band stared mellow and clean, but quickly brought the heat. Liza’s amazing, beautiful voice was able to cut through the music and highlight her incredible vocal range. She commanded the crowd, closing out her set with the help of the audience singing “Yes, I Still Howl At The Moon”.

Next up was Thomas Abban.  I am very fortunate in my position as a member of the local music press to see so many amazing acts, and there are moments sublime, when I know I am witnessing something special. Last night was one of those moments. It would be easy to describe Thomas as Jimi Hendrix wrapped in Lindsay Buckingham surrounded by Eddie Van Halen, but that wouldn’t do justice to this incredibly talented and original performer.  I have seen the future of rock and roll, and it is Thomas Abban. Look for big things from this young man in the future.

Headliners WTF hit the stage hit the stage around 10:45 to the cheers of the packed Entry. The eager crowd was treated to a set of new material. They stated off smooth, with a complex arrangement that included billowing keys punctuated with horn rifts. Front man Warren Fenzi’s polished guitar and velvety voice carried the evening. The band was tight, weaving a wonderful tapestry that hinted at warm desert nights. The subtle use of keyboards created a serene atmosphere that propelled Fenzi’s vocals around the Entry like vapor trails.

They rocked, too. Keyboardist Baily Cogan had the hardcore WTF fans in the Entry jamming with solid key runs and funky rhythms reminiscent of Merle Saunders. Warren showed his chops on guitar, a student of the less is more when it comes to distortion.

WTF was just the right amount of smooth, warm desert breeze to warm the Entry on a chilly Hump day night.
