If you think January nights should be a bit more dark and moody, make your way to the Icehouse tomorrow for a cool show featuring some local darkness. Wax Lead will be hosting a tape release party with Witch Watch and DJ Mercury. Tickets are available HERE
Wax Lead is a post-punk band formed in 2017. The name hints at sound: metallic elements that soften, melt, morph, burn, and solidify. Place and time bends us into unexpected things and music is found by amplifying the environment and channeling coincidence. Songs shift from blues, to punk, to ballads. Throughout the storms and valleys, Holly Axelrod’s soulful voice carries a flickering light.
Witch Watch was formed by Derek Van Gieson (Paraguay City Rollers, Roman Invasion Suite, The Bridge Over River Qua, Murder Shoes) and Anna Neighbors (Flowerstalks) following the breakup of Murder Shoes. Austin Cecil and Rory Donovan (both of Monica LaPlante’s Band) joined the lineup shortly after and the quartet released their debut album in April of 2017. In May of 2017, second guitarist Robert Kramer was added to the lineup. While the sound of Witch Watch has trace elements of the Murder Shoes sound, it encompasses more of an eclectic blend of shoegaze, goth, punk, garage, and folk.
DJ Mercury is a local Minneapolis Goth DJ who also hosts a show on KFAI in the middle of the night, 2-4am on Thursday mornings. She enjoys long walks in graveyards and drinking blood with her fellow vampires. An introvert by nature, you may be able to catch her on a rare occasion dancing to the light of the moon.
