Superorganism Shines Bright at First Avenue

The vibe was low key at First Avenue this Thursday. A modest group of loyal fans had gathered in front of the stage in anticipation of the music to come. Grabbing a drink from the bar the woman serving me made it a point to mention that the customers she was serving tonight were an unusually varied group, as she put it “my customers tonight have been from all over the world!” Seems only fitting for a band as international as Superorganism while UK based the band boasts members from England, parts of Asia like Japan and Korea as well as Australia and New Zealand and while the music may or may not reflect that unique combination of cultures, their fan base surely does.

Naturally as the minutes pass and showtime grows closer the energy starts to rise. The floor begins to fill up and the music playing over the speakers had to go up a notch to be heard over the volume of the anticipating fans. The band, Superorganism, was still a ways out from hitting the stage but their fans were in the building. Before they could come out the opening act Simpson had to do her thing. Starting professionally late as all artists do, she began her set not with music but with praise for the venue and the legendary status as a home of the last Prince. “Just look at the Purple Rain star” she exclaimed. Prince had an effect on her as he did many and she appears humble to be on the stage. The set started off slow and sensual and between the first two tracks Simpson again made her praises for the purple one known. But the time the fourth track rolled around members of the audience were willing to participate with Simpson adding “if I hold the mic out to you will you sing along so well that I won’t be sad?”

By the time Simpson had finished up with her set the floor was full and the balcony lines in anticipation of Superorganism. The band arrived promptly to their 9 p.m. start time and took the stage slowly one by one. A few of them, wearing sparkling robes hit the stage first ringing bells and placed themselves in front of the three glowing orbs on the left of the stage. The show kicked off there with the lead singer mentioning this is the third time they’ve played Minneapolis and sharing that it was one of their favorite places to perform. Their sure was a lot of Minneapolis love with the artist as this show and that is never a bad thing. The video texture that was projected over the band as they performed did well to transport the audience to a galaxy far far away as the three members of the band with the glowing orbs picked them up and began to dance with them as their partner. A spectacular display of visual and musical talent, from the lights and video projections, to the streamers dangling from the tambourines. From the choreographed dance to the audience interaction one thing is certain. Superorganism is a band that definitely gives their all and the live performances are not one to miss.
