The Marquee at the Varsity Theater read ‘Tonight! Mod Sun’ with the exclamation mark serving almost as a guarantee of what those in attendance would be in for. The crowd was packed right up to the side of the stage with a portion on the left side dedicated to those with small children and others suffering from disability. The evening of music started off with the guitar driven set of an artist by the name of Forget Brennan. His Dreadlocks were a sight very familiar to those who follow Mod Sun as he is a frequent collaborative partner and the two have been a pair for sometime now. The positive vibes started to pick up at this point in the evening as between shredding the guitar Brennan made sure to let the crowd know what was on his mind encouraging them all to always trust themselves. With a bouncy pop hip hop anthem thrown in at the end of the set the crowd was excited for everything to come but not overly so. The vibe during Brennan’s set was very much communal, a sense often lost among the crowds of today’s more mainstream superstars. Closing out with a new track debating the space we truly occupy when we dream, the crowd was informed how to sing along and boy did they sing. Lostin Vegas hit the stage next and upped the ante in terms of pop. A full blown pop star, Vegas raced from the back of the stage as he was announced and the bops began. Pacing from one end of the stage to the other and spending a majority of time atop the gigantic monitors that sit in front of the stage his set brought the energy up a notch or two and it seemed to be exactly what the crowd was needing. Near the end of his set he made sure to give thanks and as he performed the man himself, Mod Sun made his first appearance of the evening. Shouting out Vegas as someone who used to always be in the front row of his shows, Mod. Made everyone lose their minds and to say the set finish on a high would just simply not be accurate. It seemed far stronger than that. When Mod Sun made his was back to the stage just before 9:30 p.m. the excitement was palpable. He hit the stage promptly after an announcement was made welcoming the rising star home and the evening did not slow down after that. Launching into the set with some strong cuts the hippy seemed in excellent spirits and his ever present requests for the audience and the state as a whole to smile were only there to confirm this fact. After making his way through a couple of songs Mod Sun had a pow wow with the crowd where he announced that as of 28 days ago he was finally sober and despite the fact that you’d seen him before, tonight was the first night in his career that he was fully present and in his head on stage. A set highlight would have to be the performance of a new song that arrived at the end of last month ‘I Remember Way too Much’ with backing vocals from both Forget Brennen and the audience as a whole you’d never know this song wasn’t even two weeks old! Mod continued with hits from his debut album singing to the crowd and at times kneeling to sing with just one member of the audience. The only major hiccup of the evening came when Mod noticed a fan struggling in the crowd. His team stopped the show and fished her out as the lack of a pit made it challenging for security access all parts of the crowd. As she was carried outside Mod followed in a effort to make sure the fan was alright. Returning to the stage shortly after he announced that she was doing good and was conscious and talking again. Tonight on stage Mod Sun appeared humble and made it a point to celebrate all those who make doing what he does possible. Many people in his camp go the shout out and felt the love. A brief shred on the drums and a handful of songs later Mod Sun had unfortunately reached the end of his set given the show was all ages. The performance was memorable and one that I am looking forward to catching again
