Eastcoast (Misterwives) and Westcoast (Waters) met at First Avenue Tuesday night and the result was not a bloodbath but a fun evening. The Mainroom had a relaxed vibe and the songs between sets had many in the audience singing along to Lit’s “Sleeping with my clothes on” and Michael Jackson which had even the experience First Ave Stage Hands smiling.

Waters
Our Statistician has calculated that if Waters return to the Twin Cities with the same frequency and venue growth as they have been in 2014 they will fill the Xcel in 2016 and TCF Stadium in 2018. We watched them perform and grow from the Varsity to Mill City Night and last night at First Ave. We also watch them grow as a band and becoming a great live act. Waters introduced a new song “Up Up Up” in their set and also played a rendition of “Wrecking Ball”. As always they chatted with their fans between sets and when the crowd chanted along to they opening cords of “I feel Everything” front man Van Pierszalowski exclaimed: “You know that shit, alright”.

MisterWives
I knew little about the NYC based band. Their start was singer Mandy Lee’s desire to have an 80s cover band for her birthday. After an EP, MisterWives released their debut album “Our Own House” this February with pretty good chart success. Lee is a bundle of energy and took over the stage the moment she walked on. One interesting detail was the platforms at the edge of the stage were decorated with leaves. Lee recalled the last time MisterWives played First Avenue’s smaller Entry which she described as smaller than the stage they currently occupied.
I was impressed by Lee’s voice (and her ability to keep singing while going through a rigorous workout on stage). MisterWives is straight forward Pop. It will not melt your heart or lead you into deep thought. But their sound will certainly brighten any gloomy fall evening, and for a Pop band, that’s what it’s all about.
