Melanie Martinez made a stop at the Myth in Maplewood, MN on March 16th. Joining her at this show was Sheffield Indie Band, Alvarez Kings. It was an early show as it was all ages and I arrived at the Myth around 6:00pm and the line was already filling up with people ready to see the show. The closer it got to the time doors opened, (6:30ish), the space in front of the venue was full of fans. Once the doors were opened, the Myth quickly filled up, both on the floor and by the merch area. 7:30 pm hit and the show started!
Alvarez Kings was first up with a quick half hour set. They had a lot of energy during the performance and the crowd responded to that by singing along with them. Personally, it was the first time hearing them, but I was pleasantly surprised by the Alvarez Kings. With a nice mix of slow and fast songs, they kept the crowd singing and screaming for more. I will be looking for a full album release from them, as it seemed they only had a four song EP available for sale. They were fun to take photos of and you can see my photos by watching the slideshow below!
While waiting for Melanie Martinez to take the stage, I was amused by the excitement level of the fans. Each time the lights came on as they were testing them, the entire venue was filled with screams as they thought the show was starting! At one point, the crowd started chanting Melanie’s name as well! While I listen to mostly rock, I can’t seem to get Melanie’s songs out of my head! I was first introduced to her music when my daughters played the “Dollhouse” video for me. When her album, “Cry Baby”, came out, I purchased the LP and after listening to it a few times, I was hooked. Melanie’s songs are based around a child-like view of the world, but hidden in that are serious lyrics that make you think. That just might be the reason her songs are so popular! Every song she performed included everyone in the venue singing along as they all knew the songs by heart. Melanie Martinez put on a great show and I think the 1 hour plus wait I had to go through to buy a shirt for my daughter showed that everyone enjoyed her performance! She was also fun to take photos of and to try and frame her with all the props on the stage. You can see all my photos in the slideshow below.
Another show done for this year, and it sure has been quite the year! I look forward to many more in the future!
As always, get out and support live music and I’ll see you out there!
