George Thorogood and the Destroyers will appear at the Weesner Family Amphitheater at the MN Zoo on Sunday, June 24 as part of the 2018 Music in the Zoo series. Thorogood is an American blues-rock artist from Delaware, US, known for his high energy sound influenced by blues legends John Lee Hooker, Elmore James and Chuck Berry.
Initially a minor-league baseball player, Thorogood decided to pursue a music career after seeing a John Paul Hammond performance in 1970. George Thorogood and his longtime band The Destroyers’ self-titled and now-classic debut album on Rounder records certified Gold shortly after release. Over the course of 16 studio albums – including six Gold and two Platinum discs on Rounder, EMI and Capitol – the band would amass an unmatched catalog of hits that includes “Who Do You Love”, “I Drink Alone”, “One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer”, “Move It On Over”, “Get A Haircut” and the ultimate badass anthem, “Bad To The Bone.” But it was their powerhouse live performances that made Thorogood and his band legendary: from unforgettable appearances on SNL and Live Aid, to the opening slot on the Rolling Stones’ historic ’81 tour, to their own record-breaking 50/50 tour, to this year’s 40th anniversary of their first Canadian shows. George and his longtime band – Jeff Simon (drums, percussion), Bill Blough (bass guitar), Jim Suhler (rhythm guitar) and Buddy Leach (saxophone) – remain among the most relentless and relevant classic rock acts on tour today.
Doors open at 7:00 pm and the show starts at 7:30 with the opening act Anthony Gomes. Gomes is a Canadian blues and blues rock guitarist and singer. Gomes debut album Blues in Technicolor, was released in 1998. He began touring the United States and Canada and he has since recorded eight more albums.
The Weesner Family Ampitheater at the MN Zoo is a beautiful, unique outdoor venue and offers a great opportunity to hear some classic hits on a summer night.
