It certainly can’t be easy following Alice Cooper onto the stage – especially when an executioner has just displayed his freshly severed head.
That’s not all that made the shock rocker a tough act to follow during Wednesday night’s opening performance for Motley Crue’s Final (actually Final-Final) Tour show. Alice wasted no time getting the crowd standing as he kicked off his set with ‘Black Widow’ and then continued on into ‘No More Mr. Nice Guy’. During a rowdy ‘Feed My Frankenstein’, the 67-year-old veteran escaped from a straitjacket, strangled a nasty nurse, and then transformed into a giant monster that hulked around the stage.
It was pure gothic theatre at its best, with Alice delivering songs like ‘Poison’ and ‘Go To Hell’ and ‘I Love The Dead’ alongside shopping trolleys full of dolls parts and band members that appeared to be straight out of a horror film. As he closed with ‘School’s Out’ while using stabbing giant balloons with a hand knife as loads of confetti blew over his head, it was a great reminder Alice’s iconic impact to rock. If there wasn’t an Alice Cooper setting a performance standard like this, artists such as Marilyn Manson and Slipknot may not exist today. But with Alice, one thing was extremely clear; his performances are still superior from start to finish.
Long may he reign!
