Not knowing what I should expect when walking into a show is pretty common for me. But last night I was not prepared for the fun that A Tribute To Shania Twain turned out to be.
A benefit for Planned Parenthood and Women Winning it featured a number of great Twin Cities female artists backed up by a band that could easily referred to as a supergroup. Starting the evening were DJs from Hold Your Lady Tight Night – an all inclusive Country & Western dance party.
The greeting “I see boots, hats and confused people” pretty much summed it up. All I knew about Shania was that she’s a big time country name and of course THAT one song. Jillian Rae started the set with “Any Man Of Mine” and that brought on a rotating cast of performers that at times came on stage mid song. One thing that became clear from the first moment – every single one of the performers was having a blast. There was laughter and giggles. Corny jokes “What song are we doing? The one you can’t get out of your head.”. Slight lyric adaptations “So you’re Brad Pitt? Swipe Right! Unlike!”
All that performed with the wild enthusiasm usually only found at late night drunk karaoke sessions. Except of course much more skillfully presented.
“If You Wanna Touch Her Ask” was introduced as a song from the 90s about consent – bit of an eye opener for me. All said, it was a fun evening, full of good music (all but one new to me) and a great vibe that filled the Turf Club.
