The String Cheese Incident, the genre bending jam band from Colorado, kicked off their Spring Cheese tour at the Palace Theater Wednesday night. The band, who are constantly touring, are promoting their latest release Believe, that drops on April 15. While considered a jam band, their sound is a mix of bluegrass, prog rock, psychedelic funk with notes of jazz and calypso. They formed in the heart of the Rockies in 1993 Believe makes SCI’s 10th studio album. Outside of percussionist Jason Hann, the lineup has remained the same during this time.

The palace was bathed in black lights prior to the band coming out, highlighting the psychedelic dress of the Cheese Head crowd. SCI had no opener, however the guitar tech tuning up the bands axes treated the Palace with some tasty Scarlet Begonias/ Shakedown Street rifts to set the mood. The guys came out around 8:30 and played an hour and ten-minute set, opening with the So Far From Home.  Joyful Sound was the highlight of the set for me, I could feel the power cords and bass lines rumbling my gut from the balcony. After a 20 minuet brake, the band came back out for and hour and a half of what seemed like one continuous song. The light show was phenomenal, and totally added to the psycedelic atmosphere. They are in town one more night and tickets are still available.
