Brooklyn-based “fusion influenced jam band” (their words, not mine) Snarky Puppy will be stopping at the Palace Theater in St. Paul on May, 25th while on tour for their newest album, Immigrance. This conglomerate of musicians, normally numbering between 12-16 for live shows, relied on the talents of 19 musicians for the newest release. According to bassist and frontman Michael League, “the idea here is that everything is fluid, that everything is always moving and that we’re all in a constant state of immigration. Obviously the album’s title is not without political undertones.” While the group languished in relative obscurity for 10 years, 2014 saw them explode onto the jazz scene and, with a slew of Downbeat, JazzTimes and Grammy awards, become a staple part of the new generation of jazz masters. But, as Nate Chinen of the New York Times will tell you, Snarky Puppy isn’t really a jazz band, or a fusion band, or a jam band. His advice? “Take them for what they are, rather than judge them for what they’re not”. Snarky Puppy will be joined by jazz singer/songwriter Alina Engibaryan on May 25th, and tickets are still available HERE.
