You may be wondering why a music blog is writing about a high school. Well there’s 2 reasons:
First, the Perpich Center for Arts Education is a very unique school for grades 11 and 12 that offers high school students the option to finish their secondary education as well as focus on developing their skills at a variety of arts visual, media, literary, music, dance, and theater.
The second is a bit more personal and subjective. The staff and students pretty much saved my younger daughter. A bright kid, the traditional school setting left her anxious due to other students behavior (or lack thereof) and withdrawn, as well as struggling with grades. Her first semester at Perpich saw her blossom, looking forward to going to school and a dramatic improvement in grades across the board with a love for Math and French. She entered the literary arts program and the progress in her writing impressive. As she put it after her first day at Perpich: “These are my people”. She is now in college for sound engineering and continues to write.
What’s unique about Perpich is that the school draws from all over Minnesota with students having the option to stay at the dorm. This offers students from smaller, outstate districts an opportunity they would not have otherwise. It is a public school run by the state of Minnesota, so there is no tuition. You will find Perpich Alumni all over the Twin Cities. If you watched Project Runway this season, you are already familiar with one – Samantha Rei.
Perpich was in the news earlier this year with some concerns about state funding but wiser heads prevailed and with a new director and oversight committee the school is launching a tour of Minnesota cities to introduce itself to perspective students. If you have a high-schooler (or even a middle-schooler who likes to plan ahead), check out one of the info session in your area. It may have a huge difference in your child’s life – I know it did for mine.
