In the genre of Progressive Rock, it is great to see that is alive and well in Minnesota! Minneapolis based Ovrfwrd stands as a superior example of how pleasantly mind-blowing a musical journey can take you. Ovrfwrd formed in late 2012 and consists of four well seasoned musicians, Mark Ilaug on guitars, Kyle Lund on bass, keyboardist Chris Malmgren, and drummer Rikki Davenport. “Beyond the Visible Light” is their debut instrumental album, however a new album is in the works and is targeted for release in June 2015. One listen to the current album though and one can see the musical sophistication and complexity that is present in each track.
The test for any group of artists is their ability to perform the music live without losing that elemental edge of the studio mix. This past Saturday at Fine Line Music Cafe, Ovrfwrd took the stage for an amazing opening performance for headliner John 5. As the set opened with ‘Stones of Temperance’, the crowd was hooked. The melodic tempo of each instrumental song provided a deep richness that truly exemplified the groups creative and musical depth. While seeing ‘Man with No Shoes’ played live, you could really hear influential styles like Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Opeth, Rush, and even a key or two of Ray Manzarek from the Doors. The real treat of the set was the opportunity to hear the yet to be released ‘Dust Nova’. I can describe it best by saying that with one listen, the passage of time defocuses and that amount of ever changing drive and instrumental harmony is unbelievable. It’s like instrumental candy to the ears. Ovrfwrd finished off their set with ‘Darkest Star’ which left the crowd cheering for more.
Ovrfrwd’s current album ‘Beyond the Visible Light’ is available through common digital outlets like iTunes, Amazon, etc. This is an album to embrace and listen to repeatedly. With anticipation high for their next album release, try to catch them live … there will be no disappointment.
