Friday’s show at the Northrop Auditorium was packed with young (and some older) fans and the line for the merch booth was the longest any of the staffers can recall seeing. Welsh singer Marina and the Diamonds brought her Neon Nature Tour to the UofM campus and many of her fans were dressed up for Halloween or simply choose to manage Marina’s flashy outfits.
Opening was French Singer Christine and the Queens. I was not familiar with this artist previously, so her set came as a quite positive surprise to me. She is popular in France and other French speaking countries and is just starting to gain a foothold in the US. Her live show incorporates dance and I really enjoyed her music. She commented on the venue that she felt like she should be quoting Shakespeare and introduced her “Paradis Perdu” a mashup up French Singer Christophe and Kanye West as “weird because it’s French”.

Marina Diamandis was born and raised in Wales and burst into the scene in 2009 with her album “The Family Jewels”. She describes herself as “indie artist with pop goals” and her stage setup was definitely pop and geared toward her audience. Her band was on a raised platform and it’s 6 foot height was used to display animations. Starting out as a Jungle for Mowgli’s Road it transformed to a assembly line for “I am not a Robot”
Marina separated her performance into 3 distinct acts based on her albums
The Family Jewels
For Electra she transformed into her blonde alter ego Electra Heart and for Froot she joined her band on the raised platform. Overall this was a great show perfectly suited for her fans and fun to experience.
