The Taste of Minnesota always attracts a healthy sized crowd. The usual foodies flock to local vendors for delightful goodies and some play games or enjoy the rides. The real excitement though, is to catch some of the great entertainment in the main stage.

On Friday evening, Kat Perkins made it known to the crowded stage area, that she was ready to kick it up a notch. From the very start, Kat engaged the crowd with raw, heart-felt energy. Through the entire set, Kat nailed an amazing mix of fan-favorite songs as well as some awesome covers such as “Landslide”, “Open Arms”, and “Barracuda”. Her chilling cover of singer- songwriter Sia’s critically acclaimed “Chandelier” had the crowd immediately on their feet, where they stayed for the rest of the performance.

I have covered a lot of artists, across many musical genres, but every once in a while, I get to experience an artist making a clear connection with the crowd. This moment happened during Kat’s set. As she sang her first single, “Fearless”, the deep felt expression of the lyrics could be seen throughout faces in the crowd … many sang along, most swayed arm in arm, and a few wiped tears from their face. At the end of the song, a young teen that was in front of the stage looked up at Kat and mouthed a silent “Thank you”.

After that, there was no break for Kat. She immediately made her way out to greet her fans, sign autographs, and pose for pictures.

Growing up the daughter of a music teacher, Kat Perkins has been singing, dancing, and performing for just about as long as she can remember. At just 15 years old, Perkins made the move to the Twin Cities from rural North Dakota and her professional career began as she became a success in the Minneapolis-St. Paul theatre scene.

Over the years, Perkins has performed and recorded music as a solo artist and with numerous bands. Ironically, while on a trip, a video of her singing randomly at the Amsterdam airport ended up on YouTube and prompted a call from NBC’s The Voice. She quickly found herself in the national spotlight as a Top 5 contestant coached by Adam Levine (Maroon 5).

“Fearless” marked her debut solo release. The song was produced by John Fields (Pink, Miley Cyrus, Selena Gomez) and independently hit #5 upon release on the iTunes charts. Her latest single “Drive” continues to top the iTunes charts. Her anticipated album is sure to be a best selling hit.

When not on stage, Kat also has a school initiative program where she talks to elementary to high school students on array of subjects including “Going After Your Dreams”, “Bullying and Manners”, “Positive Impact On The World” and “Use of Social Media”.
