Highly Suspect show at First Avenue Friday evening drew fans from Wisconsin, Iowa, and North Dakota for this highly anticipated concert. The Cape Cop trio sold out this show quickly. The concert Friday evening kicked off The North American leg of Highly Suspect’s “The Boy Who Died Wolf Tour” named after their current album, which was released in late 2016, and has earned the band their third Grammy Nomination. As it often happens First Avenue competed for concert dollars with the Target Center next door where Lil Wayne was scheduled to play and still managed a sold out house.

The Indie Pop band And The Kids opened the concert for Highly Suspect. And The Kids latest album release was in 2016 “ Friends Share Lovers “. The lyrical driven songs were extremely heart felt. Hannah Mohan has a very smooth voice as a lead singer. The band played a forty minute set ending with both Hannah Mohan and bass player Tallana Katz sitting on the edge of the stage thanking fans for coming out. They played hits “ Glory Glory “ and “ All Day and Night “. The fans loved the smooth vibe of the band.

Highly Suspect took the stage and instead of opening with their usual “Bath Salts” choose their cover of Real Life’s “Send me an Angel” from their new album. Their take on the 80s classic is a dark and haunting version that and energized the crowd right from the start. For anyone disappointed by that choice, “Bath Salts” came next, but I don’t think anyone was complaining the least bit. Their set was heavy on new material but of course included fan favorite “Lydia”. I had several fans tell me how excited they were to experience Highly Suspect live. It was my first time and I found myself in agreement with them.
Johnny Stevens voice is distinct and captures the crowd’s attention in a special way. After a 12 song set, Highly Suspect returned with a 4 song encore that included “Bloodfeather” and closed with “Look Alive, Stay Alive”. As fans walked out into the night, we heard about a certain rapper who did not show up for his scheduled show. I guess indie rock fans got the last laugh that night.
