Promoting their just released album “Restless Ones” the Heartless Bastards’ played First Avenue Monday night. Founded in Ohio in 2003 they have release 5 albums and been quite active touring. In that time they have transformed into a seasoned band with a very active fan base.

The band started their set with a 1930s recording of singer Erika Wennerstrom’s grandmother converted from a metal spindle. The recording was joined in by members as they walked on stage one by one and culminated with Wennerstrom coming on stage to start with “Simple Feeling”. Heartless Bastards set list spanned their previous albums and highlighted their new material. Current singles  “Gates of Dawn” and “Hi-Line” got cheers from the crowd and fans sang along to many of the songs.

Overall it was a good show, clearly focused on pleasing fans rather than critics. Since it’s the fans that pay the bills, that is a smart move for any band.
