Nowadays Hip Hop is the new Pop. It has infiltrated the genre and most tracks topping the charts borrow from the tradition of Hip Hop, though not all. As well many of todays most popular hip hop tracks have pop elements weaved throughout. The exchange has gone both ways and the emergence of the more melodic Soundcloud wave definitely does favor a good pop hook. However, as always, there are artists out there with a vision outside the norm. Westside Gunn, Benny the Butcher and Conway. The three New York rappers have made a name for themselves and that name is Griselda. The Rappers have gained steam recently after the release of their collaborative record WWCD last November and their signing to Eminems Shady Imprint in 2017. The group effort comes after each member had already solidified themselves through their solo discography. So they are by no means new to the scene. Sonically they sounds more Wu-Tang Clan than Drake. More Pusha T than Lil Uzi Vert. Their raps are relentless throughout, paranoid, frantic and grimy. The three artists that make up Griselda paint a picture for listeners that is unlike anything else today and the raw and varied deliveries make for a griping listen the first time through. And the second time. And every single time after. Its density will have you coming back for multiple listens and appreciating new things and old each time.
Griselda are embarking on a tour in support of their album at the start of this year. The Group will be playing Minnesota this time around at Minneapolis’ own Varsity Theater. Westside, Benny and Conway will take to the stage Saturday February 29. Doors are at 7 p.m, Show starts at 8 p.m. and you can get your ticket by clicking here!
