Cheerleader at the Varsity Theater 5/6/15

Paving the way for 2 British Bands, Philadelphia’s Cheerleader took the stage in an already pretty crowded Varsity Theater. Clearly their fans were eager to see the 5 piece. Founded in 2012 they are just days away from releasing their debut full length album “THE SUNSHINE OF YOUR YOUTH”.  Their single with the same name has been doing quite well in the alternative charts.

Cheerleader started things simple by taking the stage and letting their songs take over. For “Perfect Vision” Singer Joe Haller invited fans to “groove along and dance if you like it”.  I enjoyed their music which was pop without being cheesy, showed influences of the 80s and 90s an in one case some guitar chords that would have been quite at home on a Semisonic record. Their music is lively and smooth at the same time with good harmonies and even some Maracas thrown in for good measure.

This was Cheerleader’s 2nd time in Minneapolis and the larger venue seemed to agree with them. They closed with a new song “Feel like that” that was a bit faster and rockier than their other material, I have a feeling we will be hearing this song quite a bit this summer. All in all Cheerleader delivered a very good set and I look forward seeing more of them.
