The Plott Hounds Set A New Level At The Cabooze 7/11/2015

Back in December 2014, I covered a local Minnesota band called The Plott Hounds. The band name alone was intriguing but after hearing their EP ‘Rum River Rising’, I wanted to see what this band was like live. That evening, The Plott Hounds were opening the night for the K102 Hawkey Holiday Party. The raw energy and musical talent that I witnessed was mind blowing. The response from the audience was crazy. Over the months that followed, The Plott Hounds made their way through Minnesota and with even a stop in Iowa. They have played at various venues with great audience reactions.

As we fast forward to the present, The Plott Hounds have released their newest studio album ‘Living Free’. One listen to the album and you will be hooked. Musically strong, powerful, warm, and deeply heartfelt are just some of the words that can be used to best describe the new album. Those that had a chance get a hold of the album when it went on sale, were likely ready to see their favorite song from the album played live. What the audience witnessed on Saturday night at The Cabooze was simply amazing.

VIP ticket holders gained early access at The Cabooze to find The Plott Hounds available to meet & greet, pose for photos, and sign autographs. Some of those in attendance were supporters of The Plott Hounds Kickstarter campaign which helped fund the new album. The Plott Hounds even performed a short acoustic set for the VIP group.

After the general doors opened, the evening was ready kick into full gear. The evening opened with The Dead Willow and their driving mix of blues and classic rock sounds. Second up was Jack & The Coax with their unique melodic indie sound. With each of these opening performances, both bands could easily stand on their own.

When it was time for The Plott Hounds to take to the stage, the energy was high. The crowd responded with cheering and dancing to the sets opening number ‘The Man You Need’. Out of all the times I have covered The Plott Hounds, this one was incredible and truly electric. The connection between the band and crowd is always pleasant to see unfold. The deep southern melodic charm really plays through with each song. The lead vocals from Noah Alexander (who also covers Rythmn Guitar) was widely infectious as he stood center stage. Along with Ansley McCallister (Vocals) they showed what a perfectly matched vocal pair sounds like when they fully compliment each other. The music and essential sound of what makes The Plott Hounds unique is driven by Jeff Powell (Lead Guitar), Shea Marana (Bass Guitar), Ross Schulz (Drums), Colin Wymore (Slide Guitar) and Zach Sershon (Keys/Organ/Vocals). All were at their very best and the performance deeply reflected that.

As the set wrapped up, The Plott Hounds left the stage as the crowd cheered and asked for more. For an encore, Noah Alexander and Jeff Powell came out into the spotlight, breaking into ’Storm Clouds’. Noah’s voice is powerful and his pleasant southern drawl really comes out when he is alone with his acoustic in hand. When you add in Jeff providing the amazing solo to create an hypnotic atmosphere within the song, you have a real winner. The song is so raw and deep. ‘Storm Clouds’ appears on ‘Living Free’ as a bonus track. It not only sums up the new album with a solid song, but put a beautiful ending to an awesome performance. This was followed by a transition in the highly popular song ‘Southbound’.

As a grand finale, members from The Dead Willow and Jack & The Coax joined The Plott Hounds for a great rendition of ‘Can’t You See’. What a performance!
